Gerrard Martin
Associate Dancer / Rehearsal Director
Gerrard Martin was born in Northampton, and studied at DeMontfort University, (BA Hons in English Literature and Performing Arts), and at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.
He has performed in The Lion King (West End) and in Robert North’s The Snowman, (Edinburgh Festival Theatre and Birmingham Rep), among many other musicals and pantomimes.
He has toured nationally with Tavaziva Dance, Phoenix Dance Company, as Ballet Black, Union Dance Company, Aletta Collins Dance Company, and Sakoba Dance Theatre.
He has performed in Zero Culture’s Find Me Amongst the Black; (choreographed by Darshan Singh Bhuller) at MAC, Birmingham, and Purcell Room London, and in SAMPADs’ ‘Motherland’ (choreographed by Bawren Tavaziva and Santosh Nair) on a national tour, including Birmingham Rep Theatre and Oval House London.
Gerrard has also danced for the National Theatre (‘Mappa Mundi’), English National Opera, (‘The Fairy Queen’), and The Royal Opera, (Don Giovanni), and with many commercial artists and bands, including Lionel Ritchie, Misteeq, Jamelia, Eternal, Shola Ama and Shaggy. His T.V and film credits include ‘Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps’, ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, and ‘The Magic Flute’ and the Bollywood Film Awards, (Sheffield Arena).
Gerrard also creates his own work, in conjunction with his co-collaborator singer/writer Mike Scott-Harding, and their company: ‘biggerthanME productions’;
With support from Arts Council, (East Midlands) their most recent piece was a dance/film multi-media piece called ‘Rage… and Breathe’.
He has choreographed ‘Exodus’ for the West Bengal Dance Federation in Calcutta, India.
Recently he has choreographed a production of ‘Graeculus’ at The British Museum, and for Union 2’s ‘Freedom of Speech’ at the National Portrait Gallery.
He has choreographed for a young people’s dance production ‘Animal Cavalcade’, at Landmark Theatre, Devon.
Gerrard is an experienced teacher/facilitator and has taught for many companies and organizations including:
Union Dance, Dance Physics, M.B.K. Ltd., Saffrey Arts, SOCAPA International Arts, United in Dance Project, and Northants Dance.
Gerrard is an Associate Artist at UK Foundation for Dance. Gerrard joined Uchenna Dance Company in September 2010.
