Delene Gordon
Dancer
Delene Gordon started her dancing career as a member of ‘Youth’ (currently know as ‘Shift’) based at The Place when she was 14, she was a member of this company for four years and during that time got to work with established and also emerging choreographers like Richard Alston and Jonzi D. During this time Delene got to perform extensively in London and the south East.
At 18 Delene embarked on her professional training at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where she worked hard to obtain her degree, during this time she performed in numerous dance showcases and went on tour with the Verve in 1999 performing the company repertoire with a piece by Darshan Singh Bhuller as well as student lead work.
On graduating Delene joined Phoenix Dance Company as Apprentice Dancer, where she worked as both a performer and teacher. She performed nationally and internationally with the company and had the honour of dancing for Nelson Mandela during this time. She later went on to work with Tutti Frutti a children’s theatre company performing multilingual work across the U.K culminating in performances at the National Theatre.
In 2001 Delene took a year out to travel and develop further as a dancer, during her year in Latin America she worked with and danced for companies in Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica and Argentina and gained a breath of experience. On returning to the U.K she danced for Bawren Tavaziva touring with ‘A State of Emergency’ as well as gaining her PGCE.
Since gaining her teaching qualification Delene has developed her teaching practice moving up to leadership roles within school, as well as consultation and freelance dance work. She continues to grow as dancer in Uchenna Dance Company and organises the Education and Community strand on behalf of the company. Delene has been with the company since it began in January 2009.
